Dr Rajesh Shah, a homeopath cum researcher, in his research have developed five new homeopathic nosodes from bacteria that produce typhoid (Salmonella typhi), gonorrhea (Neisseria Gonorrhea), pneumonia (Klebsiella pneumonia), gastrointestinal infections (E Coli) and from fungus (Candida albicans).

Nosodes are homeopathic medicines that are prepared from bacteria and viruses. Often, nosodes are comparable with vaccines as they are prepared from viruses and bacteria, but are not vaccines. Approximately, fifty nosodes are used in homeopathy for more than 150 years. Very interestingly, vaccination and homeopathy were introduced to the world in the same year, 1796.

Dr Shah, who has been working on new drugs for the past two decades, said that homeopathy is often subjected to skepticism because of lack of scientific evidence. This research has strong and convincing evidence having scientific proof of theanti-fungal and anti-bacterial effects of homeopathic medicines in laboratory experiments.

Dr Shah is a director and also a research head at Biosimilia Pvt Ltd, which is a start-up mainly focusing on preparation of new drugs from biological materials.

In 2018, Dr Shah was awarded a national award from the Ministry of AYUSH, for his research in the development of another nosode from the TB germs. Geeta Taleleand Dr Renuka Munshi are the co-authors of this research paper.

Candida is a common fungus which affects skin and lungs. The research paper has shown that a nosode prepared from Candida fungus was able to prevent the growth of candida fungus in the laboratory. Its effectiveness was as the standard anti-fungal medicine called amphotericin.

Also, the homeopathic nosodes that are prepared from Typhoid bacteria (Salmonella typhi) in specific doses can obstruct the growth of the germs comparable to that of Ofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin. A new drug which is prepared from E. Coli can also prevent the growth of E. Coli bacteria as efficiently as the earlier mentioned antibiotics. Typhoid and E. Coli bacteria are the major bacteria producing infections of the intestines as well as other organs.

A major cause of pneumonia is Klebsiella pneumonia. A homeopathic nosodeif prepared from the same bacteria can constrain the growth similarly with the commonly used antibiotics.

Dr Rajesh Shah said that infections due to typhoid, pneumonia and E. Coli are the most common in daily practice. Most of these bacteria become resistant to antibiotics and require stronger antibiotics having more adverse effects. It would be a great advantage if homeopathic medicines can demonstrate such effective results in human trials also, which can possibly reduce the use of antibiotics.

Allopathic doctor and trained lung-specialist from KEM Hospital, Dr Jaswant Patil said that many homeopathic studies in the past have shown anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects in animal and clinical trials. In spite of being an allopathic doctor, Dr. Patil uses homeopathic medicines for many such infections and gets excellent results. Dr Patil is a pulmonologist who has turned a homeopath. He gave up his ICU practice and is now practicing homeopathy for more than twenty years.

In a series of experiments done with several germ-based nosodes that are developed by Dr Shah, he said that they have seen anti-malaria, anti-HIV, anti-Hepatitis C, and anti-cancer effects in laboratory and human models with few nosodes. He firmly believes that nosodes will have a great future in the therapeutic and preventive roles in healthcare.

Homeopathy has been in a tradition of making nosodes from nearly all major germs that includes TB, smallpox, measles, syphilis, diphtheria, scabies, and many more. Few of the homeopathic nosodes that are prepared from specific germs were found effective in managing the epidemics of leptospirosis, influenza and dengue in Brazil and Cuba. Biosimilia has developed a nosode from the COVID-19 virus and has conducted phase 1 and 2 trials for investigating the prophylactic role of the nosode.
